Oswego East Wolves Girls’ Track and Field Pre-Season Frequently Asked Questions:
1. When does Girls Track and Field officially start?
January 22, 2018
2. When is the first Indoor Track Meet?
February
3. When is the first Outdoor Track Meet?
April
4. What should I be doing before track starts?
If you are a sprinter, jumper, hurdler, or thrower, you need to be attending the After School Conditioning Program. It meets on the indoor track at 2:45 and goes until 4:15. If you are a distance runner, see the weekly expectations on the winter training schedule. It is posted on the bulletin board in the locker room.
5. What if I play a winter sport?
You need to complete your winter season before you can begin track practice. If you play basketball, you will be able to attend practice and meets as soon as your season is over. Pre-season for you is your winter sport.
6. What am I supposed to wear for track practice?
Athletic clothing—running shorts/pants, t-shirts (no tank tops), good running shoes
When we go outside, you need to be properly dressed—hats, gloves, sweats, etc
7. Do we go outside for practice when it’s cold out?
Yes! Most days we will be outside. For distance runners, we will go outside if it is 15⁰F and higher. For the rest of the team, anything over 25⁰F is fair game! Bring warm clothes and keep them in your locker. Not having proper attire is not an excuse for staying inside. (Coaches will determine workouts based on the outdoor conditions—we will not put you in danger, but you need to be prepared to go outside every day!)
8. What if I don’t know what event I want to do?
We will make those decisions early in February. For the preseason, you may choose what is right for you—running more miles with the distance group or doing the after school training and conditioning with the rest of the athletes.
9. Do I have to do indoor and outdoor track?
Yes. Even though track season is split into two parts (indoor and outdoor), it is considered one season. You cannot choose which one to do—if you are on the team, you will participate in both seasons.
10. Do I need to buy any special equipment for track?
You should purchase a good pair of running shoes (ask a coach if you are unsure). The other items you need are warm clothes to go outside in any weather conditions. You may want to purchase Under Armour (or similar cold gear) to wear under uniform tops and bottoms for cold meets. This can also be worn to practice in cold weather. (Navy blue is suggested—for relay runners to match and for team uniformity.)
11. Do we have practice on weekends, no school days, half days, and spring break?
Weekends—there will be several Saturday practices when there is no meet on the schedule, but there will not be Sunday practices
Non school days—Yes, TBA
Half/early release days—Yes, TBA
Spring Break—Yes, TBA
12. Do I need to diet for track season?
No. You will be burning many calories in practice. You don’t need to diet, but you will want to focus on eating foods that make you feel good. We suggest peanut butter and jelly or deli sandwiches on hard workout and meet days, rather than fried foods from the cafeteria. You should also cut back on pop and drink more water during the school day.
13. What do I need to turn in to the office so I can participate?
Register online
Current physical
$75 athletic fee
Make sure you check all the boxes for the forms while completing the online registration.
14. Are there tryouts?
Officially, there are no cuts. Due to higher expected numbers, we will be looking to fill certain positions on the team. This means you may not get to compete in your first choice if there are, for example, 20 girls ahead of you for the same spot.
